Missouri Commissioner of Education Chris L. Nicastro will tour school projects in Aurora and Purdy tomorrow, September 1st, and meet with educators and representatives of the Rural Schools Partnership. Dr. Nicastro will visit a student-run recycling program in Purdy and a solar-energy project in Aurora.
The approximate schedule is as follows:
- 2 p.m., Purdy High School, 201 S. Gabby Gibbons Drive (Recycling Center is behind the school): Purdy High School is using a $16,000 grant for its full-service, student-run industrial recycling program that serves both the school and the community.
- 3 p.m., Aurora High School, 305 W. Prospect: Aurora High School received a $19,325 grant to purchase alternative-energy modules to teach about alternative-energy sources. The visit also will include seeing Aurora’s award-winning solar car project.
Both grants were made possible through the Coover Place-Based Education Grant Program. It is funded by the Louis L. and Julia Dorothy Coover Charitable Foundation Regional Grantmaking program, a partnership between Community Foundation of the Ozarks and Commerce Trust Company.
Dr. Nicastro has been a teacher and administrator in Missouri public schools for 34 years. She is the fifth person to serve as Missouri’s Commissioner of Education.
